another PSA
Apr. 19th, 2011 03:25 pmAh, spring, when a scammer's devious little mind turns to new frauds. The USPS deals with both snail mail and e-mail fraud. I recommend bookmarking the Postal Inspector's site and checking it now and then. My RM got something from one of the current frauds and really wasn't sure whether it was legit or not. Turns out not, of course. ^___^
Remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. ^___^ And especially keep an eye out for older relatives. Your 80-year old grandma might not recognize a slick fraud.

Date: 2011-04-23 02:18 am (UTC)This one is in the form of an off-shore lottery. Comes from Canada, no return address, a very crappy letter telling you that you've won $150K in a "shopper's lottery" and a (fraudulent) check for almost $4K. They want you to deposit the check and then wire 3/4 of it to someplace over-seas.
If you do all that, within a few days you get your prize - a notice from your bank that the check was a fake and you are now $3K overdrawn. Surprise!
My parents taught me well back in the day, and once my mother began to show signs of Alzheimer's, I was able to ride herd on the crap that she got.
I really hate the vile weasels who do this stuff. *growl*
