A little something ahead of the #2 worst holiday of the year. ^___^ Yeah, I confess; I hate "family" holidays. They usually wind up as mine fields or target ranges. Blood is not only thicker than water; it's harder to get rid of. >.< If you're walking into one of those tomorrow, good luck. I will be stuffing myself at the local buffet and then shopping. ^___^

BFB – Part 103 – Crazy is as Crazy Does

I opened my email, found and snagged the attachment from Beren, as well as one from Cathy. Her mail stated that she would merge both raw lists and have a professional copy for me by 1000 tomorrow. I thanked both of them in reply and got to work.

I hadn’t meant to get too into the lists, intending to just print them out as-is to give to Ctik, but there were notations galore all through them; stuff like ‘antiques appraisal’, ‘gemologist’, ‘art museum’, ‘resale shop’, and my favorite, ‘what the fuck is *this*?!’

I was still snickering over those when Zuma sidled up to my desk and slipped a parchment in front of me. It was a list of names and phone numbers, with dates and times next to each one.

“Your appraisers. I’ve already called Gisela and she’ll be ready. I’ve also arranged with the port room to pick up and deliver the appraisers. I thought we might get a better idea of the value if we consulted people not from that area.” He grinned brightly and batted his eyes at me.

I stared at him for a good five seconds. “Damn! You’re good! Where have you been hiding all this coordination?” Inazuma isn’t usually the most organized person in the office; was this some kind of love sickness?

He smacked me lightly. “I asked Enrique and Estaban where to start and they both said not to do everything local. Sometimes local appraisers will collude to get better deals. And Estaban suggested I start with ‘estate sales’ for my Google search.”

I looked over at the South American Elf and Wizard and gave them two thumbs up.

“Do you want to do all of the walk-throughs, or shall I do some?”

I checked the dates. There were about twenty appraisers scheduled over the next three days. We were going to wish we had a time turner by 1500 tomorrow. I opened my calendar and began plugging the times in. “Zuma, we’re going to need more than just the two of us.”

“I can help,” said Tiffany, appearing at my desk. “I’d like to get a look at the folks who care so much about a family vampire. And I helped with the estate when my grandparents passed.”

Inazuma and I looked at each other. “We won’t need to use the port room for all of them that way,” he said.

“Yeah…” I grinned up at my boss. “We would love to have your help!”

“How about Moira too? You’ll have to break early to be here when Heero gets back from his Clanhold.”

“Oh.” I’d almost forgotten that Heero wasn’t quite finished with his own mess. “Right. Yeah; sure, then. Um… If you’re sure Q won’t object? It *is* supposed to be my project…”

“Don’t be silly; you are allowed help. You’re also being graded on how well you make use of resources. We’re your resources,” she smirked.

“Cool.” I looked around the office and raised my voice. “Yo! Anyone else want to get in on this vampire thing? Plenty of stuff to do.”

Delegation- have to love it! I worked for a boss that never did and one that does- have to say, more gets done when he delegates!

*hugs* I have done all my prep work for tomorrow, so it will be an easy day of reheating and turkey cooking- and watching movies/the parade/etc! I hope you have a great T-day!

I prefer delegation, too. But only if they don't hang over you making sad, disappointed noises while you work. O.o

We're going out, as always, and then we may check out the places that have made the leap to being open on turkey day. ^___^ No buying, though; just looking and making snarky comments where warranted.

Have a great day, hon! Both of you. ^___^

Snarky commentary is fun! *hugs* Ditto!

My boss delegates - and then nitpicks the hell out of it if you show her an in-progress, and bitches about lack of progress/updates if you don't show her the in-progress! Plus can't remember or actually changes her mind about what she wanted you to do. *can't win* :P

That bites. I'm sorry it doesn't work in your office- where I work this delagating thing turned our three plus hour meetings on Fridays into about an hour. *hugs*

=P I have had those types... And the kind who ask for a progress report and then blow up because you aren't doing what they didn't tell you to do. *headdesk* *sharpens talons*

Yeah, she does that too. Or she'll tell XO that I'm doing something and doesn't tell ME because she apparently assumes that XO knows to tell me to do whatever it is. :P

And yet every interview I've had stressed the importance of 'communication'. >.< Seems like I end up doing all the communicating and the boss spends time ducking said communication. *bleh*

Oh, Boss loves to complain about how bad I am at that. When I'm not forgetting to tell people stuff, I'm phrasing myself badly and making the library look bad. I'm not sufficiently gracious for Southern standards (according to the Canadian by way of New Jersey!)

Date: 2010-12-01 05:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lavendarlizard.livejournal.com
There's a Southern standard for graciousness? O_o I must have missed that when I lived in NC. =p

I got told once that I spent too much time explaining things to new hires. *sigh* I think I just wasn't playing by the usual "if I don't tell you how to do the job, you'll never be able to take mine" rules.

Date: 2010-12-01 02:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com
People from up North like to think so. I'm not one of the Southern "bless your heart" women who can tell you where you can go and what to do with yourself when you get there when they're pissed and never raise their voice or have their tone sound less than pleasant. I'm a military brat "this is how it is, deal with it" type - not rude so much as too blunt for her taste. Of course, this is from a woman who can't say something straight out to save her life, so... :P

That sucks. As a former new hire, I would love you - and hate the jerks who told you that.

Date: 2010-12-04 12:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lavendarlizard.livejournal.com
I'm also a military brat and apparently I absorbed a bit of the pragmatism, too. That whole "all around the subject, never actually getting to it" crap has always driven me nuts. >.<

I'm a logistics-type, so it's never made sense to me to have people who are only half-trained. Every new hire I was responsible for got the whole enchilada. I figure if a newbie can come in, learn my job, and do it better, then more power to them. ^___^ But I worked with a lot of territorial types. *sigh*

Well, finally! It's about time Duo had some help in this mess. Did I tell you that I love Tiffany?

Date: 2010-11-25 01:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lavendarlizard.livejournal.com
Duo's only had the mess for a few days, so he's actually up to speed pretty fast. ^____^

Tiffany's one of those hands-off supervisors, unless you ask. ^____^

Why isn't it allowed that you be thankful all by your lonesome? I think I could work up quite a bit of thankfullness if I wasn't having to deal with a house full of relatives. >_>
I could be thankful for no drama, and no hurt feelings, and no crankiness, and a lower grocery bill this week, and the cat would be thankful too!
*sigh*
Duo will get the whole office involved and they will learn to like vampires! :D

I guess I just don't get that whole "you will love your blood relatives if it kills you" vibe. Most of my blood kin are people I would never associate with otherwise. >.< And I haven't, in going on 20 years. ^__^

My adopted brother, adopted kid and bio-kid are my family. Lot less drama, lot less crap. >_>

The whole office is a sucker for anything Duo wants. ^___^ It's the damn pheromones. *snicker*

Yeah, that's the deal. It's like that one person can leave such a slime trail at an event, that no one can avoid stepping in it. >_< You should be allowed to pen those people out in the yard for the duration. ^___^

I'm thankful for being able to do my own T-day feast the way I like it and share what I'd like to share with the kitties instead of trying to do things to someone else's schedule and having to deal with family either trying to take over or being underfoot.

(The cats are quite underfoot enough when I'm in the kitchen!)

I am socially inept so I never liked any 'family' gatherings when I was a kid. ^___^ And then a cousin of my mom's asked her flat out why she married a loser like my dad (who wasn't a loser, just in the military) and that was the end of 'family' stuff. ^___^ Haven't missed them.

Do your cats jump quicker to the sound of the can opener or a pop top being popped? ^___^

Date: 2010-11-29 04:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com
Can opener, definitely. They don't get anything that I open with a pop top, but they love their tuna and I give them the human-grade stuff.

Date: 2010-12-01 05:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lavendarlizard.livejournal.com
Mine are just a hair more responsive to the can opener, even with all their wet food coming in pop-tops nowadays. But they have to know what I'm opening, even if it's green beans.

Heh. The little one was so insistent one time, that I set the empty can on the floor for her to explore and she got her head stuck for a moment. ^___^

Neko is particularly interested because she likes both canned mushrooms (not fresh, oddly enough) and sometimes canned tomatoes.

I think it might have been a corn can... She doesn't do that anymore; just sniffs around the edge. ^___^

My current crop of furs don't have any interesting dietary habits, but previous furs have been cuckoo for watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, V-8, orange juice, coffee ice cream and something else that escapes me now... Oh, yeah; wax candles. ^___^

Correction: the little buzzsaw has a thing about something involved in the labeling of library books. O.o Every new bag of library books gets sniffed and prodded and licked. ^_o

...and my favorite, ‘what the fuck is *this*?!’

This. <3 Also, group project! XD

I'm actually giving the family a miss this year, despite living only 20 minutes away from them: I love them dearly, but I got an invitation from some friends and look forward to having a (relatively) smaller T-day actually at someone's house. (The family usually goes to a potluck dinner at their church so they don't have to worry about the turkey, Dad gets to just bake pie and nobody gets stuck with all the cleanup. It's good, but I don't know a lot of people at the church anymore and Mom seems to forget that sometimes...)

After 4+ centuries, there's bound to be some stuff that totally defies imagination. ^___^

I can usually count on the RM to return from his mom's with candy in tow. ^___^ That's good enough for me. She makes fudge... *.*

Hey guys, I just had an interesting idea reading your comments about delegation and dumbass bosses, carry a small digital recorder, that way if they go on about you not doing what they said, just whip it out and press play and crank the volume. If they get bothered by that simply tell them it's to ensure you do exactly as you're told how you're told. Hope it helps. Think I might try it. Cheers, James.

I actually tried that once long ago. Almost got fired; thought I might even get arrested. O_o Some bosses just hate records.

The last time, when it might have helped, I was too far down the garden path to remember it. >_>

That would be debatable. I was working for a quasi-governmental agency at the time, and they were really good at making their own rules and getting away with it. >_<
