I'm finally beginning to recover from my week... It's nothing like Sunny's week, so I feel pretty guilty even having a "week" to recover from, but dragons are all about these little shiny things... >_> Be sure to go give the Bird a hug. Some cookies would probably be good too. ^__~

My week started with a cat having an existential crisis; territorial issues, softness issues, "mom likes you best!" issues... *rolls eyes* And finally, after ten years, I am taking a class in how to manage my diabetes. Wish they'd had this ten years ago; I'd have been testimg myself everyday. It's kind of stressful to discover that while I've been trying to watch what I eat, especially the dreaded carbs, I wasn't doing that good a job of it. No wonder my tests have run consistantly in the 220 range. =p Hopefully, being able to test every day will help me adjust that. They even gave me a meter! Too bad the testing supplies are so expensive... O.o

So, since I am finally pulling myself together, another part of Walkabout. I might post something else this weekend also; depends on how much work I do in the house. I have a dining room to find and the clutter is large.... O_O

The second call came from Quatre.

“Duo says you’ve gone walkabout,” he said immediately upon my ‘hello’.

“’Walkabout’?”

“Gone wandering,” he clarified.

“I guess I have. It’s interesting to see the sights without having a Leo trying to shoot my head off.”

“Well, yes; that does make it easier to frame good photos. You will send photos?”

I snorted. “I will now.”

“Are you all right for funds?”

“Of course.” I didn’t quite snort derisively; Quatre was being a friend. He must have sensed it, though.

“Don’t take that tone with me,” he commanded, but without heat. “If you should need an infusion, drop me an email. You’re coming back?”

“When I’m done.”

“Does Duo know that?”

“I told him.”

“Good. He’s very attached to you.”

“’Attached to me’?”

He snorted at me. “The boy’s in love with you, idiot.”

Hm. I hadn’t followed the logic trail quite that far yet. “You think so?”

“Please, Yuy; he practically drools on your boots.”

Huh. That would take a little getting used to. I wasn’t crazy about the dark whirlwind when we met – he did shoot me that first time – but from then on, he was nothing but good.

I obviously needed to devote some thought to this new concept of Duo in love – with me. Right now, though, a change of subject was needed.

“How is Trowa?”

“Ask him yourself.”

“Hi Heero.”

“Should I send a gift or are you registered somewhere?”

“Hahaha. Just say ‘congratulations’ and leave it at that.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I’ll be waiting to offer you the same.”

“Bite me, Barton.”

“Same to you, Yuy.”

Quatre came back then. “Keep in touch, Heero. And stay out of trouble. You have my numbers?”

“Yes, dad.”

“Good. Don’t hesitate to use them if necessary.”

He hung up.

Actually, brown rice is tasty, and the fiber in it means your blood sugar doesn't spike so bad as with white rice. That's also why you'll find whole wheat / whole grain pasta in the stores now. :)

I use the whole wheat pasta, although it has a funny taste to me. I'm trying different brands; maybe it's just that. ^__^

I've tried brown rice and... about half the time it makes me gag. >_> I keep trying, but... *sigh*

I could maybe live without rice or pasta, but bread...? O.o That hurts.

The whole wheat pasta does tend to have a distinct taste, although I've gotten used to it and now regular pasta tends to taste kind of pasty. Some brands the taste is stronger than others.

Have you tried using broth instead of water to cook the brown rice? The brown rice cooked just in water is a little much for me if it gets overcooked. I've also used canned mushrooms to cook the rice in, since I'm something of a mushroom addict. ;)

And a lot of the whole wheat / whole grain breads are downright tasty, much more so than white. I love rye bread, for example, and pumpernickel. I was eating those and loving it before I knew a thing about carbs.

I'll try the broth/mushroom next time I make the brown rice, thanks. ^__^ I'm also a mushroom nut, when I can afford them. ^.o

I love Russian Rye, but my absolute downfall is sourdough or crusty french bread. I've found a few brands that freeze really well, so one loaf will last a long time. ^__^

...I just sort of assumed that everything ricey and noodley was carby.  ^^'

We mix some brown rice in with our white rice, but the brown rice needs a different amount of water to cook or something, because it's always a little tougher than the rest of the white rice.  Which can sometimes make for an interesting ricing experience, depending on the ratios.  -_-

What it actually is, is that the hull protects the brown rice somewhat from the cooking. In white rice, the hull has been removed so it cooks a little faster. Although even when cooked completely, brown rice is chewier than white because of the hull.

Man, I feel so rice-inept!  Where have I been all my life?  I have to pull down my proud got-rice? banner for a little while until I have this all sorted out.  =D

Don't feel bad. Brown rice is something that's only becoming really popular in the US lately. And in at least some parts of Asia (Korea in particular) it is considered a "lower-class" food. Because it's processed less (which actually makes it more nutritious) it's cheaper and easier to produce. That means you aren't likely to find it in Asian restaurants, for example.

Date: 2008-09-22 05:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] turnippatch.livejournal.com
*googles* The internet says that Asians are genetically not as good at processing carbohydrates as their Caucasian counterparts.  Man, evolution sure messed up on that one!

Date: 2008-09-22 05:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com
Actually, no - if you think about it, a lot of the problems caused by carbs are due to being too good at processing them. We break them down too fast, and that spikes our blood sugar. Since the Asian diet is very heavy on carbs, if they were as good at processing them as the average Caucasian, they'd probably have a huge rate of diabetes.

Date: 2008-09-22 05:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lavendarlizard.livejournal.com
O.O Does that mean that Causasians are natural carnivores and Asians are natural vegetarians...? O_o Because then I have questions about this whole cholesterol thing... >_>

Date: 2008-09-22 05:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com
More likely, it means that the heavy carb-load in the Asian diet meant that the people who were efficient at carb-processing developed problems like obesity-related heart problems and diabetes and died out young, while the ones who were more resistant to the effects of large amounts of carbs survived to breed.

Caucasians, on the other hand, because many of them lived in areas where there weren't a lot of carbs to be had during winter - and in some areas, year around - would have never developed these traits. In fact, they would have developed the ability to process them more efficiently so that they wouldn't suffer so much from the lack during winter.

Date: 2008-09-22 05:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] turnippatch.livejournal.com
The internet (not that it is always correct) does note that Asians are at increased risk of diabetes.  -_-  And that it appears genetic and not obesity-etc.-linked.

Oh, I can eat them, just not much of them at a time... *sigh* I'm reading the food facts and using my measuring cups to visualise amounts... 1/3 cup of pasta is *nothing*. O.o

And I was looking at the bento lunches at Mitsuwa... I can't have a whole bento anymore! I can have 1/4 of a bento! O_O;;; *headdesk*

I think the Walkabout bunny has been canoodling with your "Touch" bunny... >_> I didn't even notice until I started posting it. ^__^

I tend to think that measurements like '1/3 cup pasta' are meaningless, because the amount therein would totally depend on whether you were using flat pasta or curly pasta or whatever.  But hey, what do I know?

My blood sugar tends toward the high side of normal, but I just assume that's because I'm relatively high-carb and I would totally be normal if I fasted more than twelve hours before my blood test.  >_>

Touch-bunny is happy for the company!  Though I would have said the Heero-Quatre in the beginning may have been more like Axiomatic/AI-bunny, and the Heero-Trowa in the end may have been more Plans-bunny.  ^^  Bunnies for everyone!

My first thought was "elbow or flat"... ^__^

I found out that fasting raises your blood sugar. O.o I did not know that before! Makes me wonder what my blood sugar wold be if I wasn't fasting... >_>

I always found Touch bunny to be quite cuddly. ^__~ And the other ones are, of course, adorable. *offers carrots to all your bunnies*

From: [identity profile] turnippatch.livejournal.com
Maybe they mean 1/3 cup if you crushed it all up.  That wouldn't be so bad, right?  Cuz then that'd be like as much pasta as you could make with 1/3 cup of flour, right?  ^o^

Fasting... *raises* blood sugar?  O_o  Then how come we have to fast before taking the test?  (probably to get back to baseline, but still... i had a blood test taken without fasting once, and they knew immediately that i hadn't because [or so i thought] my sugar was too high or something.)

Touch-bunny's probably only cuddly because he's pleasantly tipsy on a beach somewhere, soaking up some sun.  ^_^

*funnels carrots toward plans4-bunny* i should just suck it up and move the plot forward. -_-

That's what the instructor said... O.O She says the "A1c" test gives a better picture of what blood sugar is like over a three-month period. I don't even know if I've ever done one of those... now I want to.

Hm. That's right... the Touch-bunny was working on some R&R, wasn't he? Well, he deserves it. ^___^

*adds some cucumber and celery for the Plans4-bunny* I'm anxious to see how persistant Elizabeth is... O.O

Come to think of it... I don't think I even got all of my test results back from my last doctor's visit.  =p  Silly HMO.  Oh well.  When it comes to doctors, no news is always good news. =)

Oh fine.  I'll bring Liz back as quickly as I can squeeze another chapter out of the ol' turnip.  *sigh*  (i shouldn't complain.  at least plans has a plot!  haven's so hard cuz it's always like, huh, what totally random thing do i feel like doing next? x_x)

For some reason, I sort of figured a purple dragon would be more... purple.  Yanno?  =)  It's a pretty purple, though.  *koff* Not to be confused with the Pretty Purple next to it, though. =p ('cleopatra's gown'? wtf?)

Poor kitty... she just wanted to be Alone! ^^; Is she still good since the adjustments?
I like the rather up front approach to the 'love' thing in this one, not that I don't love me some drawn out 'does he/doesn't he' angst, but this is fun. Information delivered, information accepted. And now information must be digested. *grin* Though... I wonder how Duo would feel if he knew Quatre just came out with it? *grin*

Well, I've got a couple of blenders' worth of margaritas and some chocolate-covered cashews... Would that help? O_O;;

Tekko seems to be fine, as long as I scoop out her box three or four times a day. ^__^ But now Halo is being existential. >.< He wants to use the little box instead of the freshly-scrubbed, scooped and deodorised big box. *headdesk* Only Salem is being reasonable about this; she uses both boxes. Good girl! She gets a treatsy! ^___^

I dunno, maybe I just have so much real life angst that I needed a fic that is more relaxed, laid back, soothing... Sort of. >_>

I have a feeling that Duo thinks it's still his little secret. ^___^ And Quatre is not about to enlighten him. Hm. Maybe Trowa would, but only if he was able to watch the full range of Duo's meltdown. ^.o

*snerk!*

Wouldn't be surprised if Duo gives him a bit of time then comes after him.

Diabetes is a bitch (my Mom has it) though there are time when I feel like it's one of those diseases of the decade (the ones that everyone has). One thing about the numbers though, find what's good for you not what the experts say. Mom finds she feels better if she keeps her sugar level at about 120 in the morning so it doesn't drop off too much. And it's not so much cutting out things like carbs, but eating them in moderation.

Yeah I'm lecturing a bit but I've watched her deal with this for five years. And her father died of it.

Take care and good luck.

He would probably be tempted to. ^___^

That's what the class instructor said. *sigh* I process information kind of erratically and there's so much about diabetes that I needed a real person to ask questions of - just reading doesn't explain stuff to me - so this class is really good. ^___^

My mother also had diabetes, but her's was late in life and she dealt with it as a vague annoyance and never seemed to have much trouble, even when she progressed to using insulin. O.O Hell, she'd probably be giving me instructions if she was still around. ^__^

It's not really such a bad thing; I'd certainly rather have diabetes than cancer. O.~

My mom complains that she went from taking a children's aspirin for a headache to taking five pills a day (she takes the pills for the diabetes can't stand the idea of the shot). She's decided that when you turn sixty five they should just take you out back and shoot you. It's too much of a hassle getting old anymore.

Mine turned out to be a fairly easy fix - so far. Just went back to scoopable litter in the big box, so the big guy went back to using that box, so the little buzz saw could have her private potty back. *rolls eyes*

I thank chemistry every day for Nature's Miracle. Nothing kills those smells like it. ^___^

Have you ever wondered how much wax it takes to wax a poetic...? O.o
