time change? O.o
I feel really out of it, not having realised that this was time change weekend until Friday. O.O I am usually more on top of things than this. >_> I do have something other than YouTube vids or LolCats, and I won't grumble about my petty little problems (at least one of them is fixed - ^__~), so everyone should rejoice to Basement Cat on that score. >_> If you don't, Rocco may be around to speak with you... O.~
Duo hit the button on the phone, smiling in anticipation as Relena’s image appeared.
“Duo Maxwell!” she yelled. “Are you-“
Duo threw up his hand and interrupted her sternly. “Relena, if the next word out of your mouth is any variation on ‘insane’, I will hang up on you.” He glared at the gaping blonde diplomat. “After I confiscate your ‘negotiator’ permit.”
Relena managed to get her mouth closed without exploding, but she could do nothing about the scarlet blush. Duo tilted his head, waiting expectantly. His finger hovered near the disconnect button.
She did what he liked to think of as the ‘codfish maneuver’ a few times before finally taking a deep breath and scrubbing her hands over her face. She smeared her eye shadow, he noted, but didn’t seem aware of it.
“Duo… Duo, damn it…” she whimpered. “You could have been killed!”
“True,” he agreed. “Unlikely, though, given all the safety features. The horses, on the other hand, *would* have been killed or injured badly enough to amount to the same thing.” He shrugged amiably.
“But… horses?!”
“Hey, it’s not always about kids, Relena. I like horses. They remind me of Deathscythe.”
Relena blinked, looking confused. “They… do?” She began to understand why Wufei was prone to ranting in incomprehensible Chinese over “that damn Maxwell” all too frequently.
“Yeah. They’re big and powerful and beautiful, but they agree to let us miserable humans tell them what to do on a regular basis. You ride, don’t you?”
“Um… Yes, I do. Not so much anymore, of course…”
“But you understand the power you’re being granted, right?”
In truth, she’d never thought of it that way. She liked animals in general, but she wasn’t a ‘pet person’. Her experience on horseback was primarily a duty. She had attended schools that graduated well-rounded young women, suitable for making ‘good’ marriages or entry into ‘good’ universities; horseback riding was just another thing to be checked off.
“I-I guess so… I’ve never thought of it that way before,” she admitted in a small voice. Clearly, this was an important concept to Duo.
“You have the same power at your fingertips, you know,” he offered with a smirk. “In a more abstract way, of course. You hold a helluva lot of power over the lives of hundreds of millions of people. A wrong move on your part and… *guussssh…* You’ve just trampled the hopes, dreams and livelihoods of a lot of those people. Like Deathscythe stepping on a strip mall. Or a horse trampling on an anthill.” He leaned back in the chair, satisfied that he had firmly derailed the lecture she had intended to give. “With great power comes great responsibility,” he intoned solemnly.
“Of course,” she agreed immediately.
“And that is why I could not allow a carload of fuckwits to hit those horses,” he said brightly. “Besides, Gonzales’ horse kissed me once; that makes me family, and you know how I am about family.”
Relena blinked. What the hell just happened? Good grief, had she just been ‘maxwelled’?! Duo grinned at her expectantly. Apparently so. She rolled her eyes with a sigh, acknowledging defeat.
“Well. I guess I won’t be laughing at Wufei anymore,” she huffed.
“Wufei?” he asked innocently.
“On those occasions when you drive him right out of his mind,” she reminded.
“Oh, yeah,” Duo said slowly, dreamily. “Those times.” He chuckled and held out his hand. “Peace?”
“Oh, all right,” she grumbled. “I’ve lost my momentum anyway.”
“The only one that doesn’t work on is Heero,” he confided. “He’s psychic or something.”
“Psycho, more likely,” she muttered. “But all right; I give. No lecture. As long as you tell me *exactly*, in great detail, what happened.”
“You got it, babe. Before or after the part where Wufei fainted?”
“Wufei *FAINTED*?!”
